The American Sentence

Writing Challenge

This is Day 6 of my 30 Day Challenge.

Today’s writing task is to write 3 American Sentences.

The American Sentence was invented by Allen Ginsberg. He believed that the 17 syllables of Japanese Haiku divided into three lines of 5-7-5 didn’t work for him as it was too arbitrary.

His solution was the American Sentence – one sentence, 17 syllables, end of story.

Here is one of his gems:

Four skinheads stand in the streetlight rain chatting under an umbrella.

At our wedding, I said ‘I do when what I should have said is, ‘I don’t’.

He loved the thrill of playing kiss chase especially so late at night.

They gave him a grand to kill his best friend, he would have done it for less.
