Virtual Writers Group – Let’s Write A Poem

I don’t often write poetry but when I do I like to have a strict format to follow.

Some years ago I came across a poetic form called Etheree. It’s attributed to an American poet, Etheree Taylor Armstrong of Arkansas.

This syllabic poetry form consists of 10 lines of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 syllables.

You can also have…

Reversed Etheree:  10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

Double Etheree:  1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10, 9, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

Triple Etheree, Quadruple Etheree, and so on!

Here is an example of mine – a double Etheree.

Peace
looked on,
surveying
this broken world.
Would they let him in?
These angry, hateful men,
hearts and minds full of mistrust,
bent on carnage and destruction.
He knew he had no choice but to try.
Arms outstretched, he strode into the war zone.
War saw him coming and laughed in his face.
His weapons would soon destroy this fool.
Peace felt the pain of the bullets,
but carried on undeterred.
With Hope by his side
and Right at his back,
he dare not fail.
Without him
our world
dies.
